What Are Hoists?
Industrial hoists, or hoists, are defined as mechanical or electromechanical lifting devices that use mechanical leverage to move objects vertically while supporting hanging loads. It is an essential component of an overhead crane system that helps in lifting and lowering loads.
Mechanical hoist tools are responsible for evenly distributing and lifting weight upwards, which is achieved through the help of gears and pulleys. The pulley is then used for transferring low forces over long horizontal or vertical distances. Additionally, a rope or chain is secured around a drum, barrel, or wheel, that of which is further secured to other pulleys and gears that have different radii. Typically, hoists have a hook at their fixed end which is connected to a moving trolley or crane. Meanwhile, another hook is present at the moveable end which is responsible for engaging the load.
Applications of Hoists
Industrial hoists are applicable for fixed or mobile applications, but can be modified in design to accommodate specific jobs. They can be used for basic and general purpose lifting, like removing an engine from a vehicle. While hoists are applied wherever lifting and moving is needed, their usage is not limited to just industrial applications. They are generally used in lifting equipment, construction equipment, cargo loading, maintenance & repair applications, and warehouse management, among others. Some of the areas where hoists are regularly used include the automotive, aerospace, logging, construction, mining, marine, manufacturing, and medical industries.
The Different Types of Hoists
1. Manual Hoists
Also referred to as chain falls, manual hoists are ratchet or hand chain-operated lifting devices. These hoists use two separate chains. The first chain (the hand chain) is used for controlling the lifting and lowering movement, while the second chain (the load chain) supports the load. When compared to other types of hoists, manual hoists have a longer lifting time, require additional work for lifting heavier loads, and are more vulnerable to wear and tear. However, they are low in initial cost, portable, and easy to transfer.
2. Powered Hoists
Powered hoists are hoists that are operated by a controller. These hoists come in 3 varieties: electric, pneumatic, and hydraulic types. In comparison to manual hoists, powered hoists have faster lifting speeds and a wider lifting capacity range. On the other hand, certain electric hoist models are susceptible to overheating when frequently used, and pneumatic models are only applicable where sparking is a concern.
